The woodcut is developed from a series of images Fisher has made, which explore the lives of notable women. Margaret Morse (1883–1974) was one of the world’s leading ornithologists, and author of Studies in the Life of the Song Sparrow (1937).

Lucifer and Lantern were printed in collaboration with Simon Marsh of Paupers Press, London, who worked with Fisher to achieve the subtle patina in the surface of the etchings. The images are akin to Fisher’s paintings, in the sense that they present visual palimpsests.
